Originally known as Township #1, Brookfield, Seven Mile Brook Plantation and Titcomb Town in Somerset County, Anson was settled in 1772 and incorporated on March 1, 1798. The town was named for British Lord George Anson, a Royal Navy officer.

Most of the population of the town is centered around two villages.  Anson, on the southern end of town, borders Madison which sits across the Kennebec River.  North Anson is located at the confluence of the Carrabassett  and Kennebec Rivers.
